Alton, Va. (18 August 2020) – Stoner Car Care Racing driver, Ben Waddell, heads to VIRginia International Raceway (VIR) in the No. 47 Stoner Car Care Hyundai Veloster N TCR this weekend as he looks for a return to the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge podium this Sunday (TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold, 2:55PM ET).
Entering the weekend armed with a lot of laps around the 3.27-mile circuit, the outing with 47 Motorsports will mark his first-ever run at the track in TCR class competition. Following three consecutive top-ten finishes in the previous three rounds of Michelin Pilot Challenge competition, the 24-year-old rides a wave of momentum into the race weekend after having scored his first IMSA podium at Sebring International Raceway in July.
Waddell is familiar with VIR having made four previous starts in the F4 U.S. Championship as well as scoring top five finish at the track in IMSA Prototype Challenge competition in 2018.
Joined by teammate Alex Papadopoulos, Waddell is focused on returning to the podium and collecting championship points as he currently sits sixth in the points standings.
“Getting back in the No. 47 Stoner Car Care Hyundai is exciting,” said Waddell. “VIR is a track where Alex (Papadopoulos) and I had strong results at. He has already gotten familiar with the track in the Hyundai Veloster N TCR as he raced at VIR earlier in the year. Every time I am able to be in the car my goal is to perform at the best of my ability and to bring a result home. I am mentally fresh and ready to take on VIR.”
Despite all of that experience, the Stoner Car Care driver has readied himself for the TCR outing with extensive simulator training for the tricky 17-turn course. During the COVID break, Waddell participated in the IMSA iRacing Pro Series event at VIR where he finished 12th in the field of 50 professional drivers.
“I’ve been on the sim every night after work, just to be as ready as possible when we unload,” said Waddell. “There is only so much track time, so you have to make the most of every session and I want Alex and I to be as productive as we can be for 47 Motorsports. The track will change every session with all of the other series that will be there, so that will add to the challenge, but I think that racing this Hyundai TCR at VIR is going to be a blast.”
Waddell and the No. 47 Motorsports Stoner Car Care Hyundai will take the green flag for the Virginia Is For Racing Lovers Grand Prix on Sunday, August 23rd at 2:55PM ET. Live streaming will be available on TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold.
